In the wake of international focus on terrorist group, ISIS, Australian authorities have been placed on high alert after a social media campaign was posted by the group encouraging the recruitment of child brides for its members in Syria.
A 14 year-old girl was detained, along with her Uncle, at Sydney International Airport after she was placed on a watch list for children at risk of being taken overseas for the purposes of marriage. Although the pair were later released after questioning by authorities and cleared of any terrorist links, Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison, commented that child marriages were ‘an abomination’ and ‘an assault on Australian values’.
Under the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth), forced marriage is a crime punishable by up to 7 years imprisonment where the victim is a minor (under 18 years-old).
