Family Violence Commissioner Reports

Family Violence Royal Commissioner, Marcia Neave reported at the Law Institute Family Violence Conference on 5 August 2016 that a fellow judge had told her that he still had nightmares as a consequence of the violence he witnessed of his father towards his mother.

The Commissioner reported that family violence in our community is significantly underreported of the complaints recorded by police. From the complaints recorded by police, 9 percent are recidivist perpetrators and two thirds of the victims are women.

The Commissioner was still unable to say what really worked to change perpetrators behaviour.

The evidence showed that a large number of children who had been affected by family violence turned out to be violent themselves.

The Commissioner considered that many lawyers taking instructions did not take allegations made by complainers with sufficient seriousness, particularly if the allegation was of economic abuse.
